About the Course | ||||||||||||||||||||
As we know, despite major research on understanding of genetics and biological basis of Psychosis over five decades of intensive development of new drugs for this condition, psychopharmacology has not yet provided a complete solution for psychotic disorder. Treatment failure residual symptoms, chronicity and recurrences are commonplace. The degree of improvement in a positive symptom of schizophrenia with antipsychotic medication is typically less than 20% (Khan et al. 2001). Additional treatment methods are required to help patients understand and manage their illness and reduce symptoms that do not fully respond to medication. Evidenced based investigations have demonstrated efficacy of CBT. The outcome of literature for CBT intervention with psychotic symptoms indicated that there is growing body of Support for a range of CBT related programmes. Specifically, it appears that there is a strong support in the form of randomized controlled trails for the use of individual CBT in treating persisting psychotic symptoms such as hallucination and delusions. This form of psychological treatment has been shown to produce significant improvement in psychotic symptomatology. National Institute of Clinical Excellence in United Kingdom concluded that a course of CBT should be offered to all patients with Schizophrenia (National Institute of Clinical Excellence 2002) |
